CASE STUDY #1

Use of design thinking to enable digitalisation and process optimisation

STARTING POINT:

On the basis of a specific challenge, an automotive supplier wanted to carry out an internal evaluation of the performance of tried-and-tested innovation methods. To this end, an industrial process was selected that extended from the incoming delivery of parts through to various warehousing stages and on-demand supply to the production line.

APPROACH:

Suitable consultancy modules were selected in consultation with the client.  1. Value stream mapping, 2. design thinking, 3. lean innovation. A corresponding interdisciplinary team was then put together.

First of all, the value stream for the entire process was mapped and analysed in order to establish a solid basis for optimisation and pinpoint weaknesses.

At the start of the project, the client’s team did not possess sufficient knowledge of design thinking as an innovation method. Therefore, we presented the participants with best practices in innovation management and taught them the basic principles of the method using a practical example. This paved the way for applying the design thinking method to the identified challenges in the final module.

The analysis clearly illustrated that cobots were a potential alternative for the high manual workload associated with simple, repetitive tasks. As this module sought to demonstrate the idea in practice, we drew on a corresponding expert working with a cobot. Using the design thinking method, we were able to develop and evaluate numerous potential solutions spanning the defined challenges. With the help of the cobot, the team put the most promising scenario into practice and documented it in an explanatory video. The team was thrilled with the speed and versatility with which the innovative solutions were implemented.

Empowering employees for agile methods and projects

STARTING POINT:

An aviation firm decided to introduce agile project management approaches in its innovation projects. Therefore, SALT AND PEPPER Consulting produced a bespoke training programme that reflected the requirements of the client’s innovation projects.

APPROACH:

In consultation with the client, we developed a multi-stage training programme to teach executives and employees about innovation projects using agile project management methods, especially Scrum. Alongside employee training sessions, we also developed coaching programmes in which the teams were offered practical support and advice to help them boost the agility of their projects.

OUTCOME:

The training and coaching programme developed in consultation with the client was incorporated within the company’s regular training catalogue and therefore established on a permanent basis. Ever since, SALT AND PEPPER Consulting has helped numerous innovation teams digitalise their projects and make them more agile.

Agile project coaching with ‘innovation snacks’

STARTING POINT:

A mechanical and systems engineering firm was planning to roll out various innovation projects. The intention was to systematically support these projects over their entire life cycle with consultancy services from SALT AND PEPPER Consulting.

APPROACH:

Initially, the innovation projects were tailored to requirements and made fit for purpose. With the projects already underway, the Scrum Masters and Product Owners were given coaching on their roles, with project progress reflected upon in regular reviews. Furthermore, new technologies and methods (e.g. ‘Kill Your Company’) were repeatedly introduced alongside the project as ‘innovation snacks’. This gave rise to a constant stream of new ideas and perspectives, guiding the project to success in a quick and lean way.

OUTCOME:

The systematically guided projects were supported by highly satisfied team members and led with agility to the desired success.
